The Australian Labradoodle has moved well beyond the original breeding of the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle.
Let's start with the Confirmed and Approved Parent Breeds of this dog. They are:Poodle (Standard, Miniature, Toy), Labrador Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel, and English Cocker Spaniel.
BTW, the pictures below are of my 2 Australian Labradoodles, Wally and Murphy.
Now, what are the advantages of the Australian Labradoodle?
There
are many advantages to owning a Australian Multi-Generational
Labradoodle, which is why the breeding standards are so high, and why
they are so desirable.
The two most common reasons people ask for these dogs is because they are generally non-shedding and have an excellent temperament.
Of course, this temperament can't be 100% predictable, depending on any number of variables such as the type of environment they were raised it, the breeding stock, etc.
But it can have a highly predictable temperament if the right sire and dam are bred together.
The intention of the Labradoodle, was to have a dog with the temperament of a service dog, like a Lab or a Golden with the non-shedding coat of a Poodle.
When thinking about best trait of Labradoodles, many believe it would be their allergy friendly coat. Others say it's their intuitive intelligent nature.

Owner Margaret Stahl tells this story about her Australian Labradoodle, "His temperament is unbelievable. He has often been used in groups at obedience classes to show "how to handle situations."
Several dogs who have been impossible to manage in the presence of other dogs without attacking have learn it rolls off Bryn's back & this has calmed them down. This has been right from 10 weeks of age when he was in puppy class."
One significant reason for the success of these dogs is most breeders have strict policies to control the quality of their dogs.
For example, most breeders have a contract with purchasers of their breeding stock, which requires a new breeder to agree to perform juvenile desexing on their puppies before sale.
This simple act has a significant impact in protecting future generations.
Are there any disadvantages to the Australian Labradoodle?
Even
though a great majority of Australian Labradoodles are non-shedding or
allergy friendly, there is still a chance the blending of particular
bloodlines might not be successful.
But with a reputable breeder, the success rate is very high. It is important to note people who are allergy sensitive can still have problems with even the perfect dog.
For example, some people are allergic to dog saliva. According to Beverley Manners at Rutland Manor, "there is no dog known whose saliva will not aggravate the allergies of these people.
If you think you have this kind of allergy, provided your reactions are not life-threatening nor gravely serious, a test should be made of the saliva of a top coated Labradoodle, before committing to adding one to your family."
A rising concern with Australian Multi-Gen Labradoodles is the diminishing genetic diversity, because over the last 10 years there are now hundreds of breeders claiming to be knowledgeable breeders.
It's the reason why I (Edie MacKenzie) have invested so much time with this website to educate the public about the Australian Labradoodle and the Poodle Labrador mixes.
